Abstract

|
This is a study regarding two methods of administration of D.D.S. tablet and its effect on bacteriological conversion rate of bacteriological positive leprosy patients admitted to National Sorokdo Hospital between the period 1955 and October 1961.
From 1955 to April 1960, patients were given quota of tablets for one month, the weekly dose being 600mg, expecting that they would take it regularly. From May 1960 the practice was changed. The tablets were given twice a week and the patients had to swallow them in the presence of the medical personnel. The bacteriological conversion rate by the two methods were as follows;
1) When handed over to patients
In July 1957, 36,5% became negative
In May 1958, 42.8 % 4
In May 1959, 44. % it
In June 1960, 45.2 % -r
2) When swallowed in the presence of medical personnel
In October 1961, 72.6 % became bacteriologically negative.
3) It will be observed that the latter method gave a much higher conversion rate
than the former. Conversion rate increased from 45.2 % to 72.6 %.
